Meet Nancy

IMG_0620I’m Nancy Spiccia, a Certified Health Coach with a passion for sharing the benefits of REAL FOOD and a healthy lifestyle.

I haven’t always been health-conscious. As a child I loved sugary processed foods, never imagining the impact these things would have on my ability to live life.

My mom was a wonderful cook and she inspired me to be creative with food. I became an avid fan of Bon Appetit magazine in college then worked at a cooking school prepping the food for some amazing chefs. Food has always been the highlight of our family gatherings and still makes me smile. What’s changed is that I’m now eating less from a box or a can and more from nature. So what caused this shift in thinking?  I’d love to share my story with you…

As I entered the workforce after college as a CPA, the stressful demands of life started to wreak havoc on my health. The first major health issues I experienced were chronic sinus and respiratory infections and I willingly took whatever drugs my doctors prescribed…antibiotics, steroids, decongestants, you name it. These all impacted my immune health which eventually contributed to additional health problems including asthma, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, thyroid disease and even heart irregularities.  The eczema on my hands was so bad that I was embarrassed to shake a client’s hand. I became chemically sensitive, unable to tolerate perfumes or smoke and broke out in hives just from touching the ink on a piece of paper during an audit!

I felt like a hypochondriac with so many issues at such a young age. I was sadly falling apart!  I consulted with many medical specialists, underwent numerous tests, and despite the mounds of medications prescribed, I was no closer to identifying the root cause of my health problems. I struggled with feelings of hopelessness and desperation.

After several years of this, I’d had enough. I made it my mission to find real solutions which lead me down a path of intense education and research, including consultations with medical and nutritional experts around the country. I just couldn’t learn enough to make sense of everything, so I went back to school as a chemistry major and pre-med student.

Soon I began to realize the simple truth that health begins at a cellular level.  If I wanted a healthier body, then I needed to create healthier cells. Since healthy cells require adequate vitamins, minerals and proteins, I was hopeful that if I focused on rebuilding healthy cells through good nutrition, then I would create a healthier body…seemed like simple common sense!

My research persuaded me to change my diet and I started taking some high quality whole-food supplements at therapeutic levels.  I began to experience major health improvements including greater energy and less frequent sinus and respiratory problems. The severe eczema on my hands eventually disappeared, something my dermatologists told me would NEVER happen!  Eventually I no longer needed all the prescription drugs, including my inhaler, and I haven’t experienced any of these health issues since that time.  Hallelujah!  I was now on the path to recovery after years of apprehension about whether I would ever be well.

As I continued to look for ways to improve my health, detoxification became a major area of interest. I had tested positive for high levels of toxic substances including pesticides, mercury, phthalates, styrene and other xenobiotic compounds, things I had accumulated over a lifetime that I’m confident contributed to my health issues. I recently had the privilege of addressing this topic on an episode of the Dr. Oz Show that exposed pesticide and GMO concerns with food.

Over the past 20+ years, I’ve explored and continued to research health solutions from around the world, considering what experts on both sides of the fence have to say. As a CPA, I was trained to be objective. I’ve applied that principle of objectivity to my study of nutritional science and have determined that it is important to be cautious about dogmatic, black & white positions about health and nutrition since it is a field that is constantly changing as we continue to make new and exciting discoveries.

Because everyone is unique, what works for one person, may not be good for another.  This concept of bio-individuality may explain why it’s important to listen to your own body and use common sense when you encounter a “new” dietary theory claiming to be the “right” way to eat.  I’m continually AMAZED by our body’s ability to naturally heal itself when provided with what it needs. Our bodies are incredibly intelligent.  We’re wired to thrive in a healthy, nutritious environment.

I wholeheartedly believe that we must find balance in ALL areas of life to be truly healthy. The quality of our health can have an enormous impact on our ability to handle life’s challenges. Being healthy enhances our ability to live life with greater passion and joy.

I believe that the cumulative impact of making small healthy changes every day will add up to a healthier future not only for ourselves, but for generations to come.

Please feel free to explore what I’ve put together for you. I hope you’ll find something that inspires you to live your life in a healthier way!

Warmly,

sig
