3 Tips for Perfect Whipped Coconut Cream (great alternative to dairy)

If you LOVE whipped cream but would like an alternative to dairy, you may want to try coconut whipped cream!  It has the same creamy, delicious texture as traditional whipped cream and it’s DAIRY-FREE!  My first attempt at making it did not go so well, so I’d like to share 3 tips for making beautiful whipped cream the first time!

Tip #1: Select Quality Coconut Milk:  It all starts with a can of high-quality unsweetened coconut milk.  If it’s too runny, it won’t whip up. I used Native Forest Organic Coconut Milk, which is high-quality and the can lining is BPA-free.

Tip #2: Refrigerate the Can of Milk: I found that by putting the can of milk in the refrigerator overnight, you can easily skim off the thick part (which will harden at the top) and leave the water that is at the bottom of the can (discard).  Use a can opener to cut off the entire top of the can and use a fork to carefully scoop out the solid part of the coconut milk that is on top, making sure to leave the watery part in the bottom.  Place the solid cream in your electric mixing bowl (I used my KitchenAid).  You could also chill your beaters, if you’d like, although I did not.

Tip #3: Whip cold milk before adding any other ingredients. Since I wanted to add vanilla and maple syrup (both are liquid), I found it best to add these AFTER I whipped the cream to a thickened state.  Mix in vanilla and your favorite sweetener after the cream is whipped and you should have beautiful smooth and creamy whipped cream.

Perfect Whipped Coconut Cream

  • 1 can unsweetened coconut milk, chilled well
  • 1 ½- 2 Tablespoons of pure maple syrup (or your favorite sweetener)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Place chilled coconut milk in a mixing bowl (Tip #2) .  With electric mixer beat until thick and creamy (Tip #3). Mix in vanilla and sweetener to taste.

Serve with fresh berries, on pumpkin pie, or try this with our healthy creamy chocolate (avocado) pudding.  Use this as you would regular whipped cream!

Note: Experiment with different flavors like chocolate, strawberry, etc.  Just be sure to add any liquid once you’ve thickened your cream.  Please share your ideas with us!
